Stories from East Timor

With the Tories in disarray in Clevedon (yes news of it has carried to the other side of the planet!)and the Fair Votes campaign picking up momentum, here is some gentle distraction from the World Vision programme in Timor Leste, where your former parliamentary candidate is advising on the water situation in this very beautiful, if previously trouble strewn Pacific island nation, and even managed to say hello to Ramos Horta, the Country's rather laid back President.

If you would like to support World Vision's work in East Timor please go to www.worldvision.org.uk

Brian Sign's Off for East Timor

Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokes Person for North Somerset leaves the UK for East Timor.

Brian Mathew who stood against Liam Fox for the Liberal Democrats in last years general election gaining 20,687 votes, 6,000 up on the previous general election, is to go to work in East Timor with World Vision on their water, sanitation and health education campaign.

Brian who is standing down as the Lib Dem Spokesperson for North Somerset said “It has been really good to do this for three years, but I can’t really continue from the other side of the planet. Campaigns still need to be fought in the area, for example to stop the National Grid putting its pylons across our green and pleasant land. But there have been some successes, it is good that we have managed to save some of the Post Offices in North Somerset, and that in Portishead there currently is a campaign to open a new one. The surviving winter apeal has also been launched in North Somerset to help the elderly with the help of the Quartet Community Foundation. The Save our Surgery campaign in Wrington has at least been partially successful in keeping a satellite surgery for the town so that those residents that want to can walk to get to the doctor can do this. It was also great to be able to obtain £5000 a year extra funding for the Portishead Lifeboat from Bristol City Council.

So all in all it has been a good and positive experience and I salute the people of North Somerset and the members and supporters of my party. Of course the next challenge for them will be the local elections on the 5th of May and the vote the same day to change the voting system to the fairer AV system which will allow voters to rank the people they want 1, 2, 3 on the ballot paper rather than putting a rather demeaning X. And that is up to you to fight and win!”
Over to you now!
Love and Sunshine

Join the AVAAZ campaign to save the bees

Dear friends,

Bees are dying off worldwide and our entire food chain is in peril. Scientists blame toxic pesticides and four European governments have already banned them. If we get the US and the EU to join the ban, other governments across the world could follow, and save bees from extinction. Sign the petition and forward this urgent appeal:

Sign the petition
Silently, billions of bees are dying off and our entire food chain is in danger. Bees don't just make honey, they are a giant, humble workforce, pollinating 90% of the plants we grow.

Multiple scientific studies blame one group of toxic pesticides for their rapid demise, and some bee populations are recovering in countries where these products have been banned. But powerful chemical companies are lobbying hard to keep selling these poisons. Our best chance to save bees now is to push the US and EU to join the ban -- their action is critical and will have a ripple effect on the rest of the world.

We have no time to lose -- the debate is raging about what to do. This is not just about saving bees, this is about survival. Let’s build a giant global buzz calling for the EU and US to outlaw these killer chemicals and save our bees and our food. Sign the emergency petition now, and send it on to everyone and we’ll deliver it to key decision makers:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/save_the_bees/?vl

Bees are vital to life on earth -- every year pollinating plants and crops with an estimated $40bn value, over one third of the food supply in many countries. Without immediate action to save bees many of our favourite fruits, vegetables, and nuts could vanish from our shelves.

Recent years have seen a steep and disturbing global decline in bee populations -- some bee species are already extinct and last week we learned that some US species are at just 4% of their previous numbers. Scientists have been scrambling for answers. Some studies claim the decline may be due to a combination of factors including disease, habitat loss and toxic chemicals. But increasingly, independent research has produced strong evidence blaming neonicotinoid pesticides. France, Italy, Slovenia and even Germany, where the main manufacturer Bayer is based, have banned one of these bee killers. But, Bayer continues to export its poison across the world

This issue is now coming to the boil as major new studies have confirmed the scale of this problem. If we can get European and US decision-makers to take action, others will follow. It won’t be easy. A leaked document shows that the US Environmental Protection Agency knew about the pesticide’s dangers, but ignored them. The document says Bayer’s "highly toxic" product is a "major risk concern to non target insects [honey bees]".

We need to make our voices heard to counter Bayer’s very strong influence on policy makers and scientists in both the US and the EU where they fund the studies and sit on policy bodies. The real experts -- the beekeepers and farmers -- want these deadly pesticides prohibited until and unless we have solid, independent studies that show they are safe. Let's support them now. Sign the petition below, then forward this by email to everyone you know:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/save_the_bees/?vl

We can no longer leave our delicate food chain in the hands of research run by the chemical companies and the regulators that are in their pockets. Banning this pesticide will move us closer to a world safe for ourselves and the other species we care about and depend on.

Surviving Winter Appeal reaches North Somerset

Good News for old and vulnerable residents of North Somerset as the cold hits for a second time this winter, the Quartet Community Foundation has extended the 'Surviving Winter Appeal' to our area.

Older residents who feel that they do not need all or part of their winter fuel payment can give all or part of it to those in greater need by following the link from Quartet's website www.quartetcf.org.uk

see below for the e-mail I received from Quartet's Chief Executive Deb Appleby

Dear Brian

You spoke to Ronnie Brown last month about the Surviving Winter Appeal and I wanted to let you know that we have now launched a similar campaign to Somerset Community Foundation in both North Somerset and Bath and North East Somerset.  There was some coverage of this in the Weston Gazette yesterday or you can find more information on the home page of our website.

Best regards

Time to welcome Cuba back to the World?

For nearly 50 years Cuba, a small nation of 11 million people, in the Caribbean, has suffered military and economic hostility from the USA. This continues in the form of a trade blockade and the US base at Guantánamo, which also doubles as the prison camp for al Qaeda suspects.
For 19 years the United Nations General Assembly has voted to lift the blockade on Cuba, this year there were 187 votes in favour of lifting the embargo, 2 against (USA and Israel) with 3 abstentions.

Despite this, on September 2, 2010, President Obama renewed the embargo for yet another year, until September 14, 2011, with no explanation other than that the embargo "is in the national interest of the United States”.

The irony is that the boycott has itself generated national solidarity and self sufficiency, which the Transition movement in this country so admires. For interest log on to the Cuba Solidarity Campaign’s website and consider lending your support for Cuba.

Surviving Winter Apeal

How about launching this in North Somerset?

More than 386 vulnerable people died in Somerset last winter from causes directly attributable to the cold and poor living conditions – far more than the norm and the tip of an “at risk” iceberg. The vast majority affected are over 75 years old.

The Surviving Winter Appeal is a wonderful initiative which calls on all those who can afford it to forego all or part of the Winter Fuel Payment (WFP) paid to the over 60’s by donating the money to the charity who then redistribute it locally to those who are most in need. Indeed, if just one percent of the 149,600 people over 60 in Somerset were to donate their WFP to the appeal and Gift Aid it, the Foundation could raise more than £350,000.

for more information please follow the link

Tessa Munt putting the 'Surviving Winter Appeal' before the Prime Minister

Tessa Munt (Wells) (LD): Is the Prime Minister aware that more than 420 people died in Somerset last winter from causes related to cold and poor living conditions? Will he join me in supporting a local charity, the Somerset Community Foundation, which has a surviving winter appeal whereby all those who can forgo all or part of their winter fuel payment can donate the money for redistribution to those for whom it is not nearly enough?

The Prime Minister: I will certainly join the hon. Lady in congratulating the charity on the work it does. It sounds absolutely essential. I know that she will welcome, as I did, the decision by the Chancellor in the spending statement that cold weather payments would be put on the higher level permanently, not just before an election.

Dear friends,

There are only 300 northern right whales left, and 99% of blue whales have been wiped out. These majestic giants are endangered species, and their case is being played out across the world, time and again. In fact, one third of all life forms on the planet are on the brink of extinction.

The natural world is being crushed by human activity, waste and exploitation. But there is a plan to save it -- a global agreement to create, fund and enforce protected areas covering 20% of our lands and seas by 2020. And right now, 193 governments are meeting in Japan to address this crisis.

We have just 4 days left in this crucial meeting. Experts say that politicians are hesitant to adopt such an ambitious goal, but that a global public outcry could tip the balance, making leaders feel the eyes of the world upon them. Click to sign the urgent 20/20 petition, and forward this email widely -- the message will be delivered directly to the meeting in Japan:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/the_end_of_whales98.php?CLICKTF

Ironically, 2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity. By now, our governments were supposed to have "achieved a significant reduction of the current rate of biodiversity loss." They have failed, consistently caving to industry when given a choice between narrow profit and protecting species. Our animals, plants, oceans, forests, soils, and rivers are choking under immense burdens from over-exploitation and other pressures.

Humans are the primary cause of this destruction. But we can turn it around -- we've saved species from extinction before. The causes of biodiversity decline are vast, and stopping them is going to require a move away from empty piecemeal promises with no clarity on who will pay, to a bold plan with strict enforcement and serious funding. The 20/20 plan is precisely that: governments will be forced to execute strict programmes to ensure that 20% of our earth is protected by the 2020 deadline, and massively scale up funding.

It has to be now. All over the world the picture is beginning to look bleaker -- there are only 3,200 tigers left in the wild, our oceans are running out of fish, and we're losing unique food sources to large mono-plantations. Nature is resilient, but we have to give it a safe place to bounce back. That's why this meeting is key -- it's a watershed moment to accelerate action based on clear commitments that protect nature's capital.

If our governments feel overwhelming public pressure right now to be courageous, we can jolt them to commit to the 20/20 plan at this meeting. But it's going to take every one of us to get that message to echo around the convention in Japan. Sign this urgent petition below, then forward it widely:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/the_end_of_whales98.php?CLICKTF

Already this year Avaaz, members have played a critical role in protecting elephants, defending the whale-hunting ban, and securing the world's largest Marine Protected Area in the Chagos Islands. Our community has shown that we can set ambitious goals -- and win. This campaign is the next stage in the essential battle to create the world that most of us everywhere want -- where natural resources and species are valued, and our living planet is protected for future generations.

EDF out of UK electricity

So no new Nuclear? So No New Pylons for North Somerset?
Welcome News for all in North Somerset

This morning on the Today programme it was announced that EDF is pulling out of its UK electricity supply companies, it is thus I believe highly unlikely that they will continue with leading nuclear build in the UK. If I am right then there will be no new nuclear at Hinkley Point and thus no need for Pylons across North Somerset!

It also means that the UK will have to get serious over where its energy is going to come from in the future and this means following Lib Dem policies on 1) reducing wasteful use of energy (increasing insulation etc) 2) increasing alternative energy supplies especially sea systems such as Severn Energy (low head barrage or otherwise) and 3) working with Europe to invest in the MENA project (energy from the deserts) with massive solar arrays (Mirrors and water pipes) providing energy via a Europe wide super conducting grid.

We are most definitely living in interesting times

Best wishes

Brian
