Recycling in North Somerset under the Liberal Democrats

by Deborah Yamanaka

Recycling has come a long way since 2003, rising from 14% under the Conservatives to 32% now. When I becamse the Executive Member with responsibility for waste, we extended kerbside collections to cover the whole district by Summer 2004.

We planned to increase collections to weekly, and collect printed cardboard, in 2005, but this proved too expensive at a time when we were trying to keep Council Tax down.

Collecting garden waste came next, against strong Tory opposition. This collection was so popular that we ran out of green garden bags temporarily, unfortunately coinciding with the closure of Black Rock Recycling Centre owing to dangerous falling rocks. It should re-open fully in late December, with a new plastic recycling bottle bank.

We now also have a new Recycling Centre in Backwell, with much better facilities (including plastic bottle recycling) than the old Centre.

Plans for next year include extending the garden waste collection to those areas without it, and having green box and rubbish collections on the same day.
