LIB DEMS CALL FOR NORTH SOMERSET COUNCIL TO SUPPORT EARTH HOUR

Release: - Immediate

Contact: - Cllr Deborah Yamanaka on 01934 862109

Liberal Democrat Councillors are calling for North Somerset Council to observe an initiative started by WWF charity asking residents and businesses to turn off non essential lights for an hour on Saturday 29th March between 8pm and 9pm.

Liberal Democrat leader Cllr Deborah Yamanaka has today emailed Cllr Nigel Ashton (Conservative Leader of the council), Cllr Tony Lake (Exec member for council property) and Cllr Carl Francis Pester (Exec member for the environment) saying that North Somerset Council should be involved and take the lead in reducing carbon emissions.

Cllr Deborah Yamanaka said β€œI am leading calls for North Somerset Council to be involved in turning off unnecessary lights on council premises. The council should encourage all staff to leave non essential equipment switched off over the weekend.”

Earth hour started in Sydney, Australia last year when 2.2.million people and over 2000 businesses switched off lights for an hour. That is the equivalent of taking 48,616 cars off the road for a year. The aims of earth hour are to make residents and businesses consider the lights and equipment which are often left on unnecessarily. This year over 20 major cities are taking part

Cllr Yamanaka said β€œIt is important that we all take action now to reduce carbon emissions. Switching off non essential lights also saves energy so everyone wins. The council should also be working with local businesses in the North Somerset area to reduce their carbon footprints.”
