Portishead East Councillor Resigns from District

Portishead Independent Councillor, Paul Gardner, has unexpectedly resigned from North Somerset Council. Cllr Gardner’s resignation came during the Coronavirus Pandemic. A notice from North Somerset Council’s Returning Officer, Nick Brain, said:

“Notice is hereby given that due to the resignation of Paul Gardner, a vacancy has arisen in the Office of Councillor for the said District Ward. If by 30 June 2020 (14 days excluding Dies Non, after the date of this notice) a request for an election to fill said vacancy is made in writing to the Returning Officer at the address below by TWO electors for the District of North Somerset, an election will be held to fill the said vacancy, otherwise the vacancy will be filled by co-option. However, if an election is requested, a poll cannot currently take place until 6 May 2021 as a result of the Coronavirus Act 2020 and the 2020 Regulations.”

Portishead East is a two-member ward. Earlier this week, the other sitting councillor in Portishead East, Cllr Caritas Charles, left the Portishead Independent Group in North Somerset Council to sit as an Independent Councillor.

Last May, the Portishead Independents took all but two seats in Town and District council. Meanwhile, Cllr Steve Temple and Cllr Sue Mason have worked hard to be effective and constructive in their work on a town level. Within North Somerset Council, Cllr Huw James has made a massive difference in campaigning for better public transport, affordable housing, and calling for open, greener, and fairer decision making in North Somerset Council.

Should there be a By-Election, it would be a fantastic opportunity for us to show Portishead the difference that a Lib Dem elected member can make, demanding better for their community.
