Cllr Huw James (Portishead South) is calling for a Flood Free North Somerset, sick and tired of the incessant flooding that plagues their communities. Please back our campaign for a Flood Free North Somerset.
Everyday flooding in Backwell, Portishead, Claverham, and across North Somerset are damaging to the livelihood and wellbeing of our residents. It must be stopped through proactive flood management within the district.
This April, Central Government announced they would spend £140 million less than the £1bn a year needed for fit-for-purpose flood prevention and adaptation fund. We believe that this is dangerous and irresponsible inaction, the Conservatives are turning their backs on communities most at risk by failing to provide adequate flood defences here in North Somerset.
This underfunding deprives the Environment Agency and local flood management groups of the capacity they need to build resilience against future flooding. Coronavirus has highlighted how essential it is to ensure all communities can access the funds they need during periods of crisis.
We the undersigned call for the Conservative Government to properly fund Flood Management Infrastructure and Prevention, investing to give our communities the resilience they need to cope with high levels of rainfall. Let’s build a Flood Free North Somerset.
