Mr Welton said: “After years of irresponsible Conservative management of the council, North Somerset Lib Dems are now investing in improving Portishead and our vital local services. We live in a beautiful area and it is important that we protect our natural environment and improve our built one. We want better infrastructure in the town to improve access to jobs and services, and to tackle congestion and pollution.”
He said: “When elected, I will be one of the few elected Deaf and British Sign Language using Councillors in the country. From first-hand experience, I know that the Council doesn’t currently have accessible facilities and services. I would seek to change that for the benefit of all North Somerset residents in the way that only someone with the lived experience of being constantly excluded can. I am really proud to be a Deaf candidate running for election, with your vote we can make history together for residents in Portishead East.”
Cllr Sue Mason, the Chair of the North Somerset Liberal Democrats said: “I am delighted that Portishead East has such a strong candidate in Paul Welton. Paul’s work in supported housing, local community involvement, and his lived experience put him in an ideal place to champion the needs of Portishead East.”
