Portishead East By-Election - Thank You

Paul Welton demanding better for Portishead East

Well, what a week it has been. The results are in! It’s been an honour and a privilege standing for Portishead East ward in the North Somerset Council and Portishead Town Council By-Elections on Thursday.

Yes, I didn’t win the election, but I’m still a winner because I gave this a go. I stood up and said, ‘yes I’m deaf, but I can do this, and I want to represent the residents of the Portishead East ward’. I’m no different to anyone else, after all, and that was the important thing about my campaign.

The communication barriers were an issue as a Deaf candidate, obviously, and that was a challenge, but I didn’t let it stop me and I thrived on it. I managed to get through the campaign as much as I could do with support from everyone including North Somerset Liberal Democrats, my campaign team, my followers, and most importantly, the residents of the Portishead East ward.

I had two months to campaign since I decided to stand in for the by-election and it’s been hard work, so for someone who is completely new to politics, it was an achievement to come in third out of 4 candidates for the District and Town roles, and I’m proud of this.  I was elated to see I had the backing of 316 residents who believed in me which shows there was faith in me to be a councillor. That is a motivation to keep going!

The journey from the start has been amazing and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it, and while I’m sad I was not elected, it is not the end because there is the local and general elections in a couple of years’ times to think about!

Thank you all for your support, it’s very much appreciated.
