As I write we have 8 days to go (February 22nd) before we hear about the government’s plans to ease lockdown after March 8th.
In my role as governor and as Chair of The Children's and Young People’s Scrutiny Panel, I have heard how hard the technology challenges created by the current lockdown have been for families - with 4/5/6 members of the family needing to access a screen for working from home and home learning for the children. From broadband to the number of devices needed, families have been left struggling without the things they need to adapt to lockdown life.
Fortunately, the government and local business have stepped up to provide a huge number of laptops, IPads and tablets. Schools have accessed funds to lend out much-needed equipment, and local residents have also helped to provide resources.
All meetings for schools and councils continue virtually – though I rarely have a meeting where the technology performs faultlessly!
The Chestnut School has now been finished and North Somerset Council are caretaking the school until the Clevedon Learning Trust can take it over officially.
I have an appointment to meet up with the manager at Strawberry Gardens, the extra care facility up by the new school. I'm looking forward to seeing the facilities.
Oxford Instruments have announced they are moving, with the moving date looking like it will be in summer 2022. You can see their announcement on their website: plasma.oxinst.com.
My council portfolio includes being part of a high-level consultation group looking at how we can improve Home To School Transport in the area, and I've recently contributed my thoughts and ideas to a review of how the council provides services to children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. I am pleased to report that the Ofsted Inspection of the council’s Youth Offending services came out as a 'good' rating.
I have also been lucky enough to attend an inspirational awards ceremony (virtually, of course) for children in care. Our foster carers are wonderful and the children gave some lovely presentations.
Please contact me if I can help in any way!
I hope you and your families keep well.
