We are all in a sense of deep shock after the announcement of the death of Paddy Ashdown yesterday evening.
Paddy was an unstoppable force not only in the Liberal Democrats but also with British politics. His willingness to work across party lines, his devotion to his liberal values, and his preference for Somerset rather than Westminster marked him out as a unique politician.
Much has been said. Much more could be said about this incredible man. But here at the North Somerset Liberal Democrats our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Jane, his children and Grandchildren.
We're really pleased to announce that we have selected Ashley Cartman as our parliamentary candidate for the next general election. The campaign starts now!
Sign our petition calling on North Somerset Council (NSC) to dredge the lake at the Lake Grounds to make it safer and cleaner for us all.
Many of us were alarmed to see the amount of mud in the lake in the hot weather this summer, shown in the picture below. The ducks and swans in the lake seemed even more concerned at their disappearing habitat.
North Somerset Council were not so concerned. Despite ongoing requests from Lib Dem Cllr Sue Mason that the lake be cleaned, NSC do not want to spend the money and so are saying that all we can do is wait for enough rain to fill the lake.
We see it as unacceptable that there is more mud than water in the lake and demand that it is dredged, for the benefit of the people and the wildlife of Portishead. If you agree then make sure to sign our petition.
The call for a People’s Vote and a final say on Brexit is getting louder by the day.
In June, more than 100,000 people from all walks of life marched on Parliament to demand their democratic voice is heard.
A crisis is coming this Autumn when MPs will have to decide whether to make our country poorer, trash our vital public services and wreck the life chances of the young or give us all a People’s Vote on any Brexit deal.
So we are planning an even bigger march, this time led by young people whose voices were ignored two years ago, that will make political leaders sit up and take notice.
The People’s Vote March For The Future will be the most important protest of our generation. Join the North Somerset Liberal Democrats in London on Saturday 20 October as we march for a better future.
